Fantasy Footnotes is a craft-and-creativity series for writers who love dark fantasy, gothic stories, and the how-to behind the stories. Each episode digs into a different footnote of the writing life — from worldbuilding and morally complex characters to the realities of indie publishing and co-authorship.
This episode explores what makes dark fantasy so compelling, from morally compromised heroes and corrupting magic to ruined worlds that reflect inner trauma. It also argues that beneath the grim surface, the genre is really powered by hope—and by the hard-won choice to care anyway.
This episode explores how gothic fiction uses unreliable narration not as a twist, but as the engine of the entire world. Drawing on classic and modern examples, it examines how guilt, denial, and obsession can shape atmosphere, magic, and emotional payoff in dark fantasy and romantasy.
This episode breaks down how coauthors can preserve distinct voices in fantasy by using perspective ownership, a shared style and magic bible, and a pass-and-polish revision workflow. It draws on examples from collaborative writing teams to show how raw momentum and clear guardrails can turn two voices into one cohesive novel.
This episode explores how dark fantasy settings can embody trauma, guilt, and shattered faith through decaying castles, haunted ruins, and cursed landscapes. It also examines the danger of over-symbolism and the power of environments that force characters toward painful truth and reluctant healing.
This episode explores how dark fantasy villains do more than threaten the hero—they act as mirrors, consequences, and truth tellers that expose a world’s hidden rot. It also contrasts these antagonists with classic epic fantasy foes and offers writers a practical way to build more memorable, meaningful villains.
Learn how to identify vanity publishers, from unsolicited offers and upfront fees to unfair contracts and too-good-to-be-true promises. The episode also covers smart ways to research publishers and safer alternatives through traditional or indie publishing.
Charmain Kading breaks down how to weave romance and adventure into one cohesive story, with practical tips for making every scene serve both arcs and avoiding the trap of two separate plots. She also explores how setting, worldbuilding, and emotional stakes can intensify each other so the relationship and the action resolve together in a powerful climax.
This episode explores the explosive rise of romantasy, from blockbuster sales and BookTok-fueled discovery to the genre’s core promise: emotional transformation tied tightly to epic stakes. It also asks why readers are increasingly drawn to stories where vulnerability matters as much as worldbuilding—and what that means for the future of fantasy publishing.
This episode explores how gothic fiction uses decaying settings, liminal spaces, and chiaroscuro to externalize fear, madness, and desire. It also examines how reclaiming the monstrous other can turn old tropes into tools for inclusive storytelling, agency, and truth-telling.
This episode explores how to build genuine gothic themes through the clash of longing and dread, plus crafting morally grey characters whose choices feel understandable without being excused. It also covers using magic, atmosphere, and quiet grief to reveal inner conflict, and ends with practical advice for protecting your own mental space after writing heavy scenes.
This episode explores how dark fantasy uses world-scale conflict, bleak settings, and moral ambiguity to create relentless stakes. It also digs into the internal battle at the heart of the genre, where surviving the war may still mean losing your soul.Show NotesInk & Shadows - Blog – SandDancer Books:https://sanddancer.pub/blogs/ink-shadows-blog/craft-dark-fantasy-conflict-that-haunts-your-readers
